Windows Phone Gains, Makes Up One-Third of HTC Sales

HTC said Windows Phone devices make up 30 percent of its sales, as Microsoft begins gaining ground in the mobile market. The Taiwanese phone maker is betting Microsoft’s platform will be a big part of its future plans and expect the number of Windows phones sold to go up. “We believe that Windows Phone 7 will eventually be better than other platforms and will give Android a run for its money,” said HTC’s manager in Singapore, Melvin Chua. Microsoft believes its platform has made good progress since its launch last year, and the Mango update builds on that success. Mango...

Analyst: the HTC Thunderbolt is outselling the iPhone at Verizon stores

Back when the Verizon iPhone was first announced we assumed that it would easily outsell the HTC Thunderbolt because, well, it's the iPhone. But it looks like we might have been very wrong because according to one analyst the Thunderbolt is beating up the iPhone and taking it's lunch money. Walter Piecyk, an analyst at BTIG Research, and his team made calls to 150 Verizon stores across 22 US cities and discovered that while the iPhone was outselling the Thunderbolt at 11 percent of the stores, the phones were selling even at 61 percent. Even better for HTC, the Thunderbolt...

Newest Google Android Cell Phone Contains Unexpected ‘Feature’

Yesterday, some T-Mobile stores began selling its newest mobile device, the G2, an Android-based smart phone originally slated for an October 6 release while AT&T is slated to release it later in the year. This device truly is representative of the next generation of mobile devices. The hardware capabilities surpass the abilities of most available netbook computers, including the ability to play High Definition video seamlessly. Unfortunately, the G2 also comes with built-in hardware that restricts what software a device owner might wish to install.Specifically, one of the microchips embedded into the G2 prevents device owners from making permanent changes...

HTC Planning Black Friday Launch of Chrome Tablet

More details are emerging about a Chrome OS tablet set to launch for the 2010 holiday season. If the reports are accurate, HTC, Google, and Verizon are working together to launch a Chrome OS tablet on Black Friday to kick off the holiday shopping season. The team of HTC, Google, and Verizon makes sense. Google has an intimate relationship with HTC--maker of many of the most cutting edge Android smartphones including the fabled Google Nexus One. Both Google and HTC have a solid relationship with Verizon--the largest wireless provider in the United States, and the leading purveyor of Android smartphones...

Nokia, RIM, HTC, Samsung and Motorola: Shut Up, Apple

There’s nothing wrong with the iPhone 4 that isn’t wrong with its rivals. That claim, made by Steve Jobs at the special iPhone 4 press conference Apple held last Friday, drew a loud round of catcalls from the smartphone industry, which clearly didn’t appreciate being tarred with the same brush that has smeared Cupertino these past few weeks. Nokia (NOK), Research in Motion (RIMM), HTC, Samsung and Motorola (MOT) have all issued statements taking issue with Apple’s claims and accusing it of unfairly trying to draw them into its death-grip drama. Here are their rebukes. -snip- Research in Motion: Apple’s...

iPhone or HTC Incredible? (Vanity)

Hey Freepers, I've decided to enter the world of smart phones. There are two options at this point: iPhone 4 or the HTC Incredible. I'd like your opinion if you've got some experience with either of these phones. I played with the Incredible today and was very impressed. I've known iPhone users who swear by their devices. Right now I'm leaning toward the HTC Incredible. #1- Verizon does have good coverage. I'm looking for a phone, after all. #2- Incredible seems to move very fast. #3- Incredible has voice to text. #4-Can't think of anything that the new iPhone will...

Good job with iPhone 4, but the Sprint HTC EVO 4G is staying

Jason posted his WWDC iPhone 4 checklist today and now that we know all about the iPhone 4 I would have to say this checklist shows exactly why I am planning to skip this version of the iPhone and stick with my new Sprint HTC EVO 4G device. The HTC EVO 4G has everything on Jason’s list and more already up and running. It looks like the pace of Google has brought Android into the lead with Apple for innovation and excitement in the mobile space. Looking at Jason’s list I would have to say that the most appealing features...

HTC Gains Access to Microsoft Patents

HTC Corp. of Taiwan signed a licensing deal to use Microsoft Corp.'s patents in its Android phones, as the U.S. software giant stakes a claim to technology used in Google Inc.'s mobile platform. Microsoft, based in Redmond, Wash., said Wednesday that it had entered into an agreement with HTC to allow the handset maker to use its intellectual property in phones running on Android. HTC will pay Microsoft an undisclosed amount. "We have consistently taken a proactive approach to licensing to resolve IP infringement by other companies, and have been talking with several device manufacturers to address our concerns relative...

Google Backs Its Boy, HTC, In The Apple Lawsuit Ring

As you’ve undoubtedly heard by now, Apple has filed a lawsuit against device-maker HTC over 20 patents they control. As you might imagine, Google has something to say about it too. “We are not a party to this lawsuit. However, we stand behind our Android operating system and the partners who have helped us to develop it,” a Google spokesperson emailed us. A little odd that Google would proactively send us a statement for something they’re not technically involved in. But, as we’re all well aware, this suit is much more about Google’s Android operating system than HTC. And it...

Apple Goes After HTC In Lawsuit Over 20 iPhone Patents

Apple is using its strong patent portfolio to fight iPhone competitors in court. Its latest target is HTC. Apple has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against the cell phone manufacturer. The suit involves “20 Apple patents related to the iPhone’s user interface, underlying architecture and hardware.” Steve Jobs is quoted in a press release saying: “We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.” The lawsuit itself is...

First Look at the T-Mobile G1

The first smartphone based on Google's Android marries a sophisticated HTC handset with software features that outmaneuver iPhone On October 22, T-Mobile will reap the benefits of its founding membership in the Open Handset Alliance. Through an exclusive partnership with Google and Asian handset manufacturer HTC, the T-Mobile G1 will become the first shipping mobile device based on the Android platform. Google and company have worked hard to make the T-Mobile G1 both affordable and easy to use. And while it's too soon to know how far developers will take the open source Android platform, we now know what to...
